Hardware / Consoles

Hardware info

It was the 14th game released on Capcom's CP System II (CPS-2) hardware in the arcades.

The title's debut is documented as October 24, 1995 for Asia and North America followed by releases in Japan (November 17, 1995) and Brazil (November 1995).

There have been (technically) 5 official home ports of the game.
Sega Saturn (1997 / Japan, North America, & Europe), Sony Playstation (1997 / Japan, North America, & Europe), Xbox Live and Playstation Network (2012 / in Marvel vs. Capcom Origins collection), and Arcade1Up cabinets (2021).

The Sega Saturn version was widely accepted as the better home console port during the late 1990s.

*This one was provided by DrFunk on X/Twitter who stated:
"The Saturn version was the first game to use a RAM cart in the US - and it wasn't even advertised"

Locations

Locations info

First time Chaos Dimension was shown in a video game.

Chaos Dimension was the first Marvel stage that had no corner once wall breaks and would loop infinitely. (Wonder if it's the first Capcom stage that did that?)

First time Hell (or Mephisto's Realm) was shown in a video game.

First time Thanos' floating asteroid from the Infinity Gauntlet story was represented in a video game.

Even though character sprites were reused, none of the stage BGs from this title made appearances again in later installments.
(Even though similar locations appeared later, they were completely different.)

Story

Story info

The Infinity Gauntlet Saga

First time the gems and overall story was used as a plot in a video game.
(Original comic run by Jim Starlin, George Pérez, Ron Lim, Josef Rubinstein, Tom Christopher, Bruce N Solotoff,Jack Morelli, Max Scheele, Ian Laughlin, and Craig Anderson)

Extra Info

Infinity Gems were a whole new gameplay aspect at the time for a fighting game.

Only Marvel game to have Infinity Counters that work exactly like Alpha Counters.

Majority of the characters have infinites in this game (a potential unending combo) or OTD (one touch death combos) thanks to the combo system, gems, and the way the damage scales (or lax of the scaling).
